2008 Nuyorican Grand Slam Champion

Jamaal St. John is a 32 year old poet who hails from New Rochelle, NY. He has been performing spoken word for over 13 years, getting his start at the World's Famous Nuyorican Poets Cafe in 1994. He has performed all over the US and Canada. He is a 3 time winner of the Toronto International Poetry Slam and has held the title of Nuyorican Slam King. He is also a 4 time Nuyorican Grand Slam Finalist and has

3 spoken word albums to his credit (Enterlightenment, Won't Catch Me Runnin', and The Southpaw Stance.) He is currently working on material for his 4th album tentatively titled The Fire This Time which will be released later this year. He is also currently a member of the cast of Male Ego, a 5 man theatre production which can now be seen on college campuses across this country. He was a member of the 2000 Nuyorican Grand Slam Team that placed 3rd in the nation in Providence,RI. His poetry is heavily influenced by who he considers to be the Holy Trinity of Spoken Word (Last Poets, Watts Prophets, Gil Scot-Heron). He has taped for Russell Simmons DEF POETRY and will be performing on Broadway as a part of SOUNDBITES NYC, a spoken word festival that will take place in September 2008. He is a long time patron of the Nuyorican and is extremely honored to once again be in The Grand Slam Final, hoping that the 4th time is a charm.
